Overview

The ancient Indian kingdom of Janakpur was named after King Janak, who was also the father of the goddess Sita. Sita is the native nation of the Hindu god Rama and the female lead in the renowned Hindu epic Ramayana. Currently, Janakpur is the most fascinating and dirt-free site in all of Terai’s towns.

Janakpur is not only significant religiously, but it is also the hub for the resurgence of traditional Mithila arts and crafts. Tradition dictates that Mithila women paint abstract representations of Hindu mythological characters on the walls of their homes, sometimes coming close to the appearance of a mandala.
